Brightway International School is set to achieve a landmark moment this September as it hosts its very first chess tournament — the Brightway Blitz Chess Fiesta — organized in partnership with the Maldives Chess Club. The event marks a milestone for the school's growing chess community.
Checkmate the Horizon
Running under the tagline "Checkmate the horizon," the tournament brings fast-paced blitz chess to Brightway for the first time. Games will be played in the 3+2 Blitz format — three minutes on the clock per player, with a two-second increment added after every move — a format known for its speed, tension, and demand for sharp, instinctive thinking rather than long calculation.
Fast games, faster clocks: the format promises board-side drama from the very first move, with entries free and open to students across different age categories.
Structure and Categories
The tournament features distinct age brackets, designed to ensure fair and competitive pairings so that players of similar experience and skill face off against one another. This structure allows both newcomers and more seasoned young players to compete meaningfully, without younger or less experienced students being outmatched early on.
