Laamu Chess Open Debuts with Noor Farooq Taking the Championship
A New Chapter for Chess in Laamu
The inaugural Laamu Chess Open has concluded in Laamu following several days of competitive chess, bringing together players and members of the local community for a landmark event.
Noor Farooq emerged as the tournament champion after a strong performance throughout the competition. His only dropped points came against Moosa Abdullah, with Noor recording one loss and one draw in their encounters.
Ahmed Aiham Yoosuf Hussain finished in second place, while Ibrahim Rasheed secured third place to complete the podium.
The top three finishers were awarded cash prizes, with MVR 5,000 going to the champion, MVR 2,000 to the runner-up, and MVR 1,000 to the third-place finisher.
The tournament was organised by Legacy Chess Academy in partnership with the Maldives Chess Club. The Legacy Chess Academy organising team consisted of Ahmed Shaffan, Ahmed Jazlaan Sharyf, Ahmed Raajih, Mohamed Suhail, and Mohamed Hishaam, whose efforts helped bring the tournament together and provide players with a welcoming and competitive environment.
Representing the Maldives Chess Club at the event, Kaif Mausoom served as the Chief Arbiter, overseeing the tournament and ensuring the games were conducted in accordance with the applicable chess regulations.
The Laamu Chess Open provided an important platform for competitive chess in the region, bringing players, organisers and the wider community together. The successful inaugural edition marks the beginning of what organisers hope will become an annual fixture on the Maldivian chess calendar.
