Maldives National Women's Team Secures Gold

Gold for the Maldives! A historic triumph for the National Women’s Team.

The Maldives Women’s National Chess Team has celebrated a standout achievement at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, taking home gold in Category E.

The Maldivian women competed against 189 teams in the Women’s section and delivered a strong performance throughout the event. Starting from 159th seed, the team climbed to 106th place overall, finishing ahead of their initial ranking by 53 positions.

Their Category E result saw the Maldives finish first among 37 competing nations, securing the gold medal in the category.

The tournament also brought individual recognition for two young Maldivian players. Maryam Laisa Abdul Rasheed and Eena Abdullah Hassan both achieved the requirements for the prestigious Woman Candidate Master (WCM) title.

The Maldivian contingent consisted of Mohamed Shuaau, Mohamed Hassan, Abdul Rahman Ali, Mohamed Rakin Fayaz, Ahmed Abubakar, Nihaya Ahmed, Eena Abdullah Hassan, Maryam Laisa Abdul Rasheed, Aishath Alya Mohamed Shareef, and Aishath Noya Shahruddin Afeef.

The result represents another notable chapter for Maldivian chess on the international stage. At the 2022 Chess Olympiad, the Maldivian men’s team also secured gold in its category, while the women’s team came close to a podium finish.

The 46th Chess Olympiad was held from 15–28 September at the Silk Road Samarkand Complex in Uzbekistan, bringing together teams from around the world.
